On 12, 13 and 14 September, the show, called “Legendary Toledo”, will turn the façade of the city’s Alcázar fortress into a huge screen.
The event will be CO2-neutral and will be adapted for persons with disabilities and persons with impaired sight or hearing
In addition, the Plaza de Zocodover will host a memorable event involving music and special effects, using laser and soap bubbles to create a fun and dreamlike experience.
On 12, 13 and 14 September, the Municipal Government of Toledo, in partnership with ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño (APD), will present the audiovisual show “TOLEDO, WORLD HERITAGE SITE: LEGENDARY TOLEDO”, which will be projected on the north façade of the city’s Alcázar fortress.
The 3D audiovisual show, which lasts a total of 14 minutes, will overview Toledo’s main legends and stories, through which it will journey around the city’s most emblematic places.
The show is based on mapping, which combines large-scale 3D projections, music and special effects that will enhance viewers’ feeling of immersion. Innovative “warping” technology is also used, making it possible to reconfigure the morphological perception of a three-dimensional structure (in this case the façade of the Alcázar), combining the real image with visual effects to obtain a heightened sense of realism and volume.
The display will use six pairs of high-powered, 22,000 lumen video projectors and two pairs of 30,000 lumen video projectors to create a three-dimensional, surround-sound effect.
The soundtrack has been composed specially for the show to highlight the peaks in the narrative.
Inhabitants of and visitors to Toledo will have the opportunity to see this show on 12, 13 and 14 September, with several screenings scheduled each evening. Screenings will take place every 30-45 minutes, depending on how long it takes people to access and vacate the esplanade in front of the Alcázar. On Thursday 12 September, the first of a total of four screenings will take place at 22:00 hours, while on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 there will be a total of eight nightly screenings starting at 21:30 hours.
This event is a continuation of the show “Toledo, the Universal City” presented last year by the Municipal Government and ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño, which was seen by more than 40,000 people.
City of Legends
This year’s event will be narrated by the Lady of Legend, who will visually guide viewers around the streets of Toledo to each of the scenes in which these beautiful stories took place.
The façade of the Alcázar will transform into a huge, three-dimensional set projected onto its ashlar masonry, and it will be the Lady of Legends who—as our enigmatic host—tells the famous legends like that of the Bitter Well (Pozo Amargo), the Great Bell (Campana Gorda) or the touching love story of La Peña del Rey Moro (Stone of the Moorish King).
The Lady of Legends’ narration will take viewers to the Plaza de Santo Domingo el Real, where they will be privileged witnesses to Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer’s romantic story, Three Dates.
The final stop on the journey around the city of legends will be Saint Martin’s Bridge (Puente de San Martín), where story has it that Toledo’s Master Builder was saved from disgrace by the intervention of his beloved and very shrewd wife.
APD will also turn the Plaza de Zocodover into a “forest of light trees” in which music and special laser effects will create a fun and dreamlike experience. In addition to the lighting, a series of soap bubble machines will whisk up a sea of bubbles and haze.
In the esplanade in front of the Alcázar, between screening and screening there will be laser light shows.
Accessibility, sustainability and cultural engineering
The show, designed and produced by ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño, places special emphasis on accessibility and sustainability.
There will specially reserved areas for persons with disabilities and the sight- and hearing-impaired. Moreover, like all shows created by ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño, will be carbon-neutral; in other words, the related CO2 emissions will be calculated and offset through a clean energy project, so that the final balance of emissions is zero.
Projects such as this are part of what ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño calls “Cultural Engineering”, a concept consisting of using cutting-edge visual and sensory technology to convey the history, traditions and values of a city or location so as to enhance its appeal for tourists.
